Craft Business Ideas for the Non-Crafter
So is it really true you can start a craft business if you’ve never sewn a stitch in your life?
Sure it is!
Here are just a few ways:
- Sell craft supplies. You can do this through a retail location or a web store. If “craft supplies” seems too broad, narrow your stock down to something you’re at least passionate about. Even if you don’t know a lot, you’ll be interested in learning more about your chosen niche.
- Help other people sell their crafts. If your community doesn’t have a craft expo, set one up. Sell booths to area crafters and even admission at the door. You can also charge the crafters to pay you a percentage of their total sales. Sprinkle in a little entertainment and a food vendor or two, and your expo should be a success. Timing is another key issue. We’ll delve into this topic a little more tomorrow.
- Make kids’ craft kits to sell. People don’t usually expect kids to do a lot of sewing, so their craft kits would need to involve gluing (or today’s glue dots), threading with yarn, etc. Sell your kits online or advertise with fliers in shops that carry children’s clothing and accessories.
- Create digital files for crafters. You’d be surprised at how many craft-oriented people have a little fear of computers. Machine embroiderers especially need to convert their favorite embroidery patterns into digital files. Machines that once accepted floppy discs are now eliminating the floppy drive for the more compact flash drive. A whole separate business could be devoted to scanning in paper patterns and saving to file for crafters.
I hope this has given you a few ideas to think about. We’ll keep looking into more ideas and ways to make them happen. If you have any specific questions, I’ll be glad to address them!
